A man only learns in two ways…

“A man only learns in two ways, one by reading, and the other by association with smarter people.”  ~Will Rogers

I believe there are 2 kinds of bosses.  The first kind are those that won’t admit that they don’t know something.  The kind that hides their lack of knowledge behind bluster and insecurity.  They make mistakes, are very dissatisfied with their job, and eventually leave because they either give up, or they’re managed out.  They are angry when someone else “makes them look bad”, and are small, vindictive people.

The second kind says “hey, I like the way you handled that, thanks for teaching me something new” and “I need help with this tricky issue, and I know you’ve dealt with stuff like that before, can you help me figure it out”.  These types understand that good managers are made by experience, and that they don’t have to make a mistake to learn – they can ask for help, and it should be gladly given by others with more experience.

The Moral: Elephants make terrible bosses…
