Compromise – why it doesn’t ALWAYS work.

22 03 2013

“What’s the two things that they tell you are healthiest to eat?  Chicken and fish.  You know what they should do?  Combine them, eat a Penguin.” ~ Dave Attell

Today’s quote makes me think about how sometimes, compromise creates a situation where the solution is not workable for either side.  I’m not arguing against finding a compromise solution (see last week’s early bird & early worm story).  We all know leadership is gray, and sometimes, as a leader, you have to pick one direction and move that way.  This is especially true when you have to choose between polar opposites.  If there are good reasons for moving both east and west, then compromise would mean standing still!  Assuming that movement is necessary, gather the data, think about the overall goals in your area of responsibility, and start moving one way or the other.  You might be wrong, but at least you’re not sitting still, gathering dust.
