Cheese moves, and Stuff happens… Move on.

“What you are afraid of is never as bad as what you imagine.  The fear you let build up in your mind is worse than the situation that actually exists.” ~Spencer Johnson, Who Moved My Cheese.

If you haven’t read this most excellent book about dealing with change, I highly recommend it – and you can read it in a few hours, max (as always, we’ll reimburse you for the purchase).  Fair warning: there are some spiritual themes for those who might be offended. Non-readers can watch this 7 minute summary video:

Not only will it help you understand the change process better, but it will help those of you who just might be struggling with employees who really, really don’t like change, and are loud about it.

Mr. Johnson is absolutely right.  As a chronic worrier, I almost always get myself worked up over things that, once I just deal with it, are never anywhere near as bad as my worst case scenarios.  Bad news NEVER gets better with age! However, this worrying trait is also what makes me pretty fair at my job.  When things go sideways, I’ve usually already planned out in my head what plan B, Plan C, and Plan D are… Sometimes being a perpetual devil’s advocate and chronic worrier is good for the workplace.

Sometimes, not moving on (to find new cheese) is a recipe for disaster…
