Leading like a Monkey

26 07 2013

“Democracy is the art and science of running the circus from the monkey cage.” ~H.L. Mencken

Leadership is a lot like that.  Here we are, managing 5, 15, or 50 staff, sometimes remotely located from us.  These line-staff are the customer-facing side of most companies.  If we’re lucky, we’ll be able to sit side-by-side with them 1-2x per month, or have a QA audit or 2 done on their interactions with clients.  But for the vast majority of their day, they are interacting with customers unsupervised!

How can any company possibly run this way?  Trust.  We have to trust our staff to do the right thing.  Maybe we trust, but verify, and correct when we find problems, but we start with Trust.  Since you are in the position of having to trust your staff whether you like it or not, you may as well like it, and SHOW THEM that you trust them.  Don’t be in “I’m gonna getcha” mode.  Be supportive, thank them for their great work.  Sure, you might find out that some have violated your trust, but most wont.  Manage the bad seeds up or out, and the rest will grow along with you.

Thank you Mr. Rubin for such a great comic tie-in!
