What’s on your tombstone?

“If people never did silly things, nothing intelligent would ever get done.” ~Ludwig Wittgenstein

People are so serious some time.  Have a little fun in the office today – be silly!  Head down, getting work done, being busy, busy, busy is bad news.  Our company has a policy that every employee must take five consecutive days of vacation off.  That’s for a reason.  It’s primarily set up so that you have to have someone cover your job, and that allows us to detect fraud, theft, dishonesty, whatever.

It has a second reason, in my humble opinion.  It’s to remind you that the company can go on without you.  It’s helps you realize that IT’S JUST A JOB!  When I say this, I don’t mean that we should not give 100% when we’re working.  Nor should we dismiss the good work that do as “just a job” in the classic sense. We are saving lives, literally – that’s cool! Think on this, though:  How many of you would come in and do your job every day for free?  I don’t see a lot of hands going up.  Job – the thing you do for money, so you can spend the money on things that you would do for free (and even pay to do!).

Think on this the next time you get all worked up because a co-worker raised their voice at you or otherwise “disrespected you”.  Think on that when you’re about to raise your voice to your co-worker, or do the same dissin’ to them.  Don’t make it personal – be polite, have some fun, it’s just a job.  I love my job, I’ve been doing it for almost 21 years.  I’ve seen us change so many people’s lives – and that’s some good stuff to put on a tombstone.  But damn if I’d come in and do it for free!  🙂

Speaking of silly…
