Boss… I’m bored.

“Someone once told me that growth and comfort do not coexist.  And I think it’s a really good thing to remember.” ~Ginni Rometty

Growing pains – a very real thing, whether you’re a little kid with sore legs because you’re in a growth spurt, or because you’re a company trying to go from “Good to Great”, or a medium sized company to a large one.  This change creates tension, anxiety, discomfort, pain, all those nasty things that you have to power through in order to get to the next stage of growth.

With employees, you’ll find that some “just want to do their job and be left alone”.  Companies need these people, but we don’t need them in leadership positions . People that can’t deal with change, and who don’t like gray areas aren’t going to deal well with the challenges of learning how to lead, change, and succeed as a company evolves.  So, when you’re lucky enough to identify an employee who thrives on change, keep an eye on them.  If they dive into new projects with gusto, can deal with setbacks, and are one of the most rare and beautiful types of employees – those that aren’t afraid to tell you that they’re bored, for fear of getting work piled on them – then keep them happy, and promote them as soon as you can!

Speaking of Coexisting…
