Being as genuine as a dog!

8 12 2014

“Many of the qualities that come so effortlessly to dogs – loyalty, devotion, selflessness, unflagging optimism, unqualified love – can be elusive to humans.” ~John Grogan

These qualities can be elusive to humans, but they are far from impossible to have.  Many have these qualities at home, like unqualified love for a family member who made a mistake, or devotion to a spouse of many years.  There are few loyalties as strong as between siblings, even if it’s the kind of loyalty that says “I can beat up my brother, but you better not think about it!”

Exhibiting these qualities at work might be a harder thing to be genuine about.  While that may be true, if you want your team to follow you, and give you 100%, you better find a way to have these qualities, and have them genuinely.  Staff can smell false optimism, and will not be there pulling along with you in a pinch if they think that you’re just as likely to bail on them at the first sign of hardship.  Showing loyalty to your team will create loyalty back at you, so be a genuine leader, and it will pay dividends for your own career.

Speaking of devotion (and dogs)…
