“Hey, watch this train wreck happen”

10 12 2014

“My wife Mary and I have been married for 47 years, and not once have we had an argument serious enough to consider divorce; Murder, yes, but divorce, never.” ~Jack Benny

It’s a shame the new generation won’t get to enjoy Jack Benny’s humor on any sort of national scale.  Sure, a few will see him on you tube, but that guy was a classic comedian.

Keep in mind that newcomers to your organization don’t know “what everyone else just knows”.  Be sure that your on-boarding process (both the HR Side, but especially team specific training) gets them up to speed on the cultural norms and values.  If a more tenured employee tells a joke that half the team laughs at, then take the time to tell them the back-story so they feel included.  If there are customers that need special care, be sure to give them the heads up (versus saying “Hey, watch this train wreck happen” to your co-worker the first time the Noob has an interaction with that customer, whether internal or external).  Giving the new folks all the intel that they need to succeed will make your team more likely to succeed.

Speaking of divorce…
