That’s a bully idea!

“The triumph of persuasion over force is the sign of a civilized society.” ~Mark Skousen

In a lot of ways, our world is way more civilized than it was, even when I was a kid.  While there are still bullies at school, the latest anti-bullying campaigns and teacher training means that the extent of bullying seems to have shrunk.  Kids are more willing to stand up to bullies for a friend.  In the rest of the world, the biggest guy doesn’t always get his way just because he’s the biggest.  Kids are being raised to “use their words” when there’s a conflict, and that seems to have taught the parents a bit more about the same thing.

In the workplace, one of my pet peeves is the “do it my way because my title is higher than yours”.  Don’t convince me with your title (your positional authority), convince me with your ideas.  Ideas on how to solve problems from the front lines are often the best, because those folks are dealing with the problem every day.  When we, in “management” come up with a “Brilliant” solution to a problem, be sure to run it by the line staff before you publish it, for often your solution causes more problems down the line.  It’s great to have a team of super users to run ideas by – they’re almost always going to add value and tweak the final look of your problem solving idea.

Speaking of civilized…
