Walk the leadership line.

“Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels.” ~Kate Moss

15 lbs. into my current weight-loss regime, I can fully embrace this concept.  Looking at one more helping of food, and understanding that equals an extra 50 minutes on the elliptical machine makes that extra helping of food look not so good.  The payment for the pleasure makes it a little easier to have some discipline.

Discipline is critical for leaders, too.  The pressure to have “favorites” versus treating your team fairly and equitably is always there.  The social drive to go out and have a drink with some of your team can create an awkward relationship when you have to tell those same team members that they’re under-performing.  For me, the easiest way to avoid those temptations is to make it clear that I don’t mix business and pleasure.  That approach may make leaders seem a bit stand-offish, but sure does make it easier to make a head vs. heart decision.  Remember, you may have to fire your employees as well as promote them, and your leader may have to do the same to you.  Make it easy on both sides by having a professionally distant work relationship. That doesn’t mean don’t have fun at work, and enjoy your time with your team, just know where the line is.

Speaking of skinny…
