Start with your toes in the sand, but eventually, swim!

“You can’t cross the sea merely by standing and staring at the water.  Don’t let yourself indulge in vain wishes.” ~Laurence J. Peter

You can indeed start any action by merely staring.  After all, you need to form the vision of success in your head, so that you can communicate it to your team.  If they can’t see the end result of your vision, they’re not going to work very hard on helping the team get there.  So take a good long time, if you need, with toes in the sand, staring at the waves, seeing the vision of your goal.

Once you’ve got a picture set, communicate it, ensure your team understands the “so what” of it, then get in the water, and start pulling yourself toward the goal, leader.  Look back often, and if you’ve done your job well, your team will be behind you, pulling along towards the goal.  Don’t forget to stop once in while to shout encouragement that you are all getting closer to the goal.  Celebrate those milestones (low hanging fruit).

Speaking of staring…
