Make ’em feel good!

Well, that says it, doesn’t it, leaders?  Say what you want, and you team may hear the Charlie Brown teacher and her trumpet voice blah-blah speaking.  Do all you want, but don’t count on them remembering what you did.  People often have a “what have you done for me lately” attitude, especially in times of stress.

Make them feel good.  Take the time to care how their weekend was, or how their child is doing in school.  Praise them for jobs well done – don’t just assume that they’re doing their job.  Help them when they’re stuck, and let them lead when they’re ready to give it a shot – even if it’s just an informal leadership role that lets them use their strengths on a team.  And don’t underestimate how quickly you can ruin career by belittling and otherwise making your team feel bad.  They’ll remember that even longer!
