Control yourself… then have a little celebration!

“Industry, thrift and self-control are not sought because they create wealth, but because they create character.” ~Calvin Coolidge

The virtues mentioned above are indeed excellent ones to display yourself.  Thrift and self-control allow us to restrain some of our more reckless urges, and industry is the stuff that leaders are made from.  If you are the kind of person who WANTS to be given the challenging project, you’re industrious, and destined for greatness, whether you succeed with the project, or it didn’t go as well as you thought, but you learned something for next time.  Don’t let it get you down, get it done next time.

The contrarian in me would argue that while thrift and self-control are indeed valued, so are their opposites – generosity and spontaneity.  Save up your resources, but if you’re ahead at the end of the year, don’t be afraid to celebrate a bit, especially when the year is a good one!  After all, people who do save, usually save for some goal (a new car, a new toy, a house, etc.).  If you don’t have that release at the end of the period of thrift & self-control, you may not want to repeat the experience.  Have fun sometimes, celebrate life, and our successes as they come!

Speaking of Self Control…
