Celebrate when the best leave your team!

11 05 2015

“The task of the media in democracy is not to ease the path of those who govern, but to make life difficult for them by constant vigilance as to how they exercise the power they only hold in trust from the people.” ~Jimmy Reid

Leaders do have some positional authority over the team that reports to them, but, much like the quote says, our team also has the power to overthrow us, if we don’t live up to the trust put in our leadership. Sure, a front-line staffer can’t fire their leader outright, but if enough of them complain to HR, they can indeed enact change. Even if they don’t proactively work to impeach their leader, if enough of them passive-aggressively don’t do their job, their leaders boss will eventually act to remove that leader from power for a lack of leadership.

Keep in mind that we, as servant leaders, have the responsibility to ensure that our teams have the resources they need to get the job done. It’s our job to coach and mentor them, and always treat them with the respect they deserve. Help them grow their skill set, and don’t be angry if they take another job that is better for them and their family. If you’ve prepared a front-line staff member for promotion, then whether or not they take a career in management on your team, you’ve done good work preparing them for that career, regardless. Celebrate these victories, and see the vacancy as an opportunity to build your next future leader.

Speaking of vigilance…
