Being cunning is an easy way to win… once.  You can backstab your way to short-term success, but teams have long memories.  When they see you win with cunning, they’re unlikely to turn their back on you in future interactions, whether or not they are the one that got stabbed in the back.  They’re not going to want to do business with you in the future.

Wisdom, on the other hand, means that sometimes you have to “leave a little money on the table”, as the best negotiators often do.  Don’t short-change your team by paying the absolute minimum.  Going with the absolute lowest bid, without understanding the scope of the contract will prove quickly that “you get what you pay for”.  Treating people with respect in negotiations may cost you a few percentage points more, but will create a satisfied partner who just might give you a break the second time around.  Cunning is short-sighted, wisdom creates many happy returns.
