Appreciating each other’s mental tool boxes.

“Appreciation is a wonderful thing;  It makes what is excellent in others belong to us as well” ~ Voltaire

When you think of something that a team member didn’t or improve upon something that they’ve been doing, most people will go one of 2 ways:  The first way is the way of negativity.  They might exhibit anger for being “bested”, jealousy that you’re getting praise that they want, or be embarassed that they didn’t think of it.  They might resent you for stealing the spotlight, or beat themselves up for not having thought of it themselves.

The other way is to appreciate the help, insight, or revolutionary thinking.  They can thank you for making their job a bit easier.  They can congratulate you for seeing a new way to do an old thing.  Celebration of your out-of-the-box thinking might encourage you to continue examining the “way we’ve always done it”.  For your part, be sure to avoid gloating and go out of your way to explain your thought process.  Sometimes, explaining HOW you came up with the new solution will allow your co-workers to use the same “mental tricks” in the future.  Maybe they’ll even make your life easier in return someday!

Speaking of appreciation (this joke took me a few beats to get)…
