Remain silent, and be thought a Flippin’ Moron, or open your mouth, and remove all doubt.

“I’m amazed at radio DJ’s today.  I am firmly convinced that AM on my radio stands for Absolute Moron.  I will not begin to tell you what FM stands for.” ~Jasper Carrott

I’ll let our Millennial leaders Google what AM really stands for, and use this quote to illustrate the fact that sometimes, quotes are indeed NOT timeless (although I used a Shakespeare one earlier this week!).  Oh, the concept that talking heads in the media are morons is indeed timeless, but AM?  Really?  Today’s quote was picked because I laughed out loud when I read it, and that happens so rarely this early.  How to draw a leadership lesson from this… Hmmm…

Whether you watch Fox News or listen to NPR, keep in mind that just about every election goes between 60-40 and 40-60.  As a leader, be aware of your audience before you pop off with demeaning jokes about “the morons on the other side”, and understand that about half of them probably are.  Your leadership position in the workplace is not your bully pulpit to spew your own thoughts on politics, religion, and other powder-keg topics.  Keep it professional, have fun, but have the right kind of fun!  It’s better to remain silent on these topics, and be thought of as an FM (clearly, it stands for Flippin’ Moron), than to open your mouth and remove all doubt!

Today’s leadership thought brought to you by Penny’s Peppermint Penny Loafers, helping America’s leaders have a slightly less awful experience when they inevitably put their foot in their mouths. 🙂

Speaking of morons…
