Hug your work frienemy.

“I can still love an ex as a person, regardless if the breakup was bad.  It takes more energy to hate them than to wish them well.” ~Ashley Greene

Wow.  I’m resorting to a quote from a Twilight star.  My cartoonist friend had many hilarious comics this week, but most were inappropriate for the workplace, so I’m running with the one below. I’ll latch on to the line above that I can dig: It takes more energy to hate than to wish someone well.  Add to that the hope that at least one of you is going to google “anthropomorphic”, so you’re going to have the too-rare pleasure of learning a new word. 🙂

As leaders, you may have someone in the organization that you don’t get along with.  They may be a competitor (i.e. for the next promotion), or they may just think differently than you do, so you find yourselves disagreeing constantly.  Maybe they just have that weird throat noise they make, and it’s getting on your last nerve.  Whatever it is, you may find yourself with a default reaction to them, which is to disagree or to immediately ridicule anything that they say.  Man, that takes a lot of energy (I know – I’ve lived it).  Re-setting your head takes more energy up front, but once you do it, and you stop hatin’, you’ll find that embracing the difference is a lot better for your blood pressure than the constant antagonism of having a “frienemy”.  Step 1 – Talk about it. Step 2 – Change your default reaction.

Speaking of …
