Pulling your head out of the weeds

17 09 2015

“There have been countless times where I’ve worked out with my kids crawling all over the place.  You just make it work.” ~Gwyneth Paltrow

Working in today’s e-centric environment has to be at least a little like what Gwyneth is talking about above.  You come in, and you’re bombarded with daily “tactical stuff”.  You’ve got e-mails, voicemails, audits to review, reports to run, things to sign, etc.  If you let yourself fall into it, there are many days when you can spend the whole day REACTING to stuff that is pushed in front of you.  It’s OK, we all know that you’ve had days like that.  Just swinging at the balls coming your way until you look up and it’s time to go home.

As leaders, we MUST pull our head out of the weeds occasionally, and look around strategically.  Look forward to where your team, department or division is supposed to be in a year, and find out what you have to do in order to push, pull or cajole your team in that direction.  If you find that you get sucked back under, come up with ways to streamline the tactical stuff, so that you can keep your eye on the vision for the long term.  Tactical must be dealt with, but without Strategic movement, you’re never going to reach any of your goals.  How?  It’s different for each person.  Like the lady said: “You just make it work”.

Speaking of crawling…
