What are your 5 virtuous traits?

21 09 2015

“To practice five things under all circumstances constitutes perfect virtue; these five are gravity, generosity of soul, sincerity, earnestness and kindness.” ~Confucius

I’d have to say that Confucius is off to a good start. I can’t think of a reason where it’s OK to not have a generosity of soul, be sincere or kind as a leader.  But allow me to poke holes in the other 2.  To practice “gravity” under all circumstances to me means that you should be serious all the time (definition: “Extreme or alarming importance” – pretty scary, huh?).  Life is too short not to have fun once in a while.  Maybe he means, like, “having serious fun, dude”, but I think not.  There are many times when leaders should be serious, but there are also times when a co-worker might need a laugh.  Balance that gravity with some levity, and your workdays will likely be more fun.

Earnestness is defined as “serious in intention or purpose”.  Same lesson here.  Work hard, be serious, get it done, then laugh a little bit.  My five would be “Generosity of Spirit, Sincerity, Kindness, Humor and Innovation”.

Speaking of gravity…
