How cool is this work thing?!?!

20 10 2015

“Isn’t it sad to go to your grave without ever wondering why you were born?  Who, with such a thought, would not spring from bed, eager to resume discovering the world and rejoicing to be part of it?” ~Richard Dawkins

I am one of those folks who, while approaching 50, still wonders what I’ll be when I grow up.  That doesn’t mean that I don’t enjoy every day that I don’t wake up dead.  In fact, in my head, it allows me a sort of childish glee to wake up, and come into the office to solve problems as they come up, and think through avoiding them in the future.  I’m psyched up to come in and give advice when asked (or not asked) to someone who hasn’t faced a challenge that I’ve conquered.  When stuff breaks, I’m not glad that it broke, but I do relish the challenge of fixing it.

As leaders, not only do we have to display a certain enthusiasm with what we’re doing in the workplace, but we’ve got to work to make it fun, or at least interesting to our team.  Many of our team may think of their career as “just a job” unless we work to make the workplace a little more stimulating than “answering a phone”, or “doing a budget for someone”.  Be sure they know that those phones are ringing with people who are doing one of the bravest things they will ever do (ask for financial help from a stranger).  That budget isn’t just numbers, but it’s giving your best advice on how someone will spend the hard earned money that they bring home for their family.  We’re changing lives!  How cool is that?!?!

Speaking of wondering…
