Plan now, shine later!

“You never let a serious crisis go to waste.  What I mean by that is it’s an opportunity to do things you think you could not do before.” ~Rahm Emanuel

I agree with the sentiments of the quote above.  Nobody celebrates when something goes wrong.  Nobody looks forward to catastrophe, but those who plan well can shine after something bad happens.

As leaders, it’s our job to worry.  It’s our job to plan for success, and then think about what might go wrong.  Plan B, Plan C, and further cascading what-if scenarios should be in your head when you roll out a new initiative, do a major system cut-over, or otherwise are responsible for a large initiative.  Nobody want’s things to go wrong, but how smart will you look when someone comes in and says “Oh NO, ‘X’ happened!!!”?  You calmly say “yep, I was afraid of that, so the plan is ‘B’.  Your calm demeanor, and confidence that plan B will fix the issue will go a long way in keeping your teams temperature in the safe range.  So plan now, and shine later, leader!
