Outsmarted by a monkey and a mirror.

“Monkeys are superior to men in this: When a monkey looks into a mirror, he sees a monkey.” ~Malcolm de Chazai

Humans are funny animals.  In general, we think we’re smarter than we are.  We believe that we are funnier than we are.  (After all, don’t we laugh at our own jokes, even when others don’t?)  On the flip-side, we think that zit on our face is way bigger, and scarier than anyone else around us.  We worry that our present won’t be good enough for our favorite niece.  In other words, we magnify both the positive and negative, and refuse to see things about us as they are.

Leaders, it’s the same for your performance.  You beat yourself up for some slip of the tongue that went unnoticed by everyone else in the room.  We write, revise, and re-write an e-mail that most people will scan and move on.  We think our employees love us (or hate us), when they’re just “meh” about us.  We’re basically not as important as we think we are, in both the best and worse sense.  Solution?  Get real, get humble & don’t sweat the small things.  Many of the folks in the office come in because they get paid.  It’s a job.  You’re a part of the job.  Do your best, and move on to the next task.

Speaking of monkeys…
