Sitting on the dock, leading.

“If you want to be a singer, you’ve got to concentrate on it twenty-four hours a day.  You can’t be a well driller, too.  You’ve got to concentrate on the business of entertaining and writing songs.  Always think different from the next person.  Don’t ever do a song as you heard somebody else do it.” ~ Otis Redding

Leadership, it turns out, also can take up a lot of your life.  Natural leaders often find themselves also leading in their social group.  They may find that when it’s time for the group to come up with a plan, that the group looks their way a lot more than their share of the time.  They may have family members who call them for advice on their personal situation.  The burden of leadership can indeed be heavy.

As you leaders work through your career, remember that someone is almost always watching, to see how you deal with issues as they pop up.  Never let them see you sweat, and never EVER get that panicked look in your eyes.  If they see you panic, it will spread like wildfire.  Likewise, don’t let them see you showing favoritism, or you’ll lose them.

Speaking of Otis Redding…
