Leave your ego at home, and listen.

“Ideas are like pizza dough, made to be tossed around.” ~Anna Quindlen

“You better cut the pizza in four pieces, because I’m not hungry enough to eat 6.” ~Yogi Berra

You get the bonus Yogi quote, just because it made me laugh (and feel like a pic-a-nic basket, Boo Boo).  Yes, I know that’s a different Yogi.

The quote about ideas, though, is a critical leadership take-away.  As a leader, you’ll have what you think is a good idea.  Some (myself included) will be tempted to just pull the trigger, and make it so.  But you’d be wise (and save a lot of time back-tracking) by bouncing your idea around a trusted group of cynics.  Tell them what you’re thinking, ask them to poke holes in the idea (I ask “How can this blow up in my face”, and then tweak it based on what you learn.  You might end up throwing it out, executing on the idea, or possibly even rolling out a better idea than you had on your own.  Leave your ego at home, and listen with both ears.

Speaking of pizza…
