Lace on a bowling ball

26 02 2016

“Building a mechanical device for its appearance is like putting lace on a bowling ball.” ~Andrew Vachss

Most of us have things that we like to collect, or treasure.  It might be a shoe collection, a shiny car, nice purses, a gun collection, stamps, coins, whatever.  Whatever it is, we like SOMETHING, and often want more than one of them.  This is what having a little luxury in your life might be about.  Something that you like (doing, collecting) is one of those perks of life outside of the office.

Leaders, at work, an elegant solution is a worthwhile to aspire to, but you’ve got to balance the solution with the cost.  If you have a solution that works, and can move on to a different solution, instead of making the first one 5% better than it was, you’re getting a lot more done, with limited resources.  So, before you try to put that lace on the bowling ball, how about building a soccer ball next?  It’s better to have 2 adequate sports (lines of service, software solutions, happy staff) than one really fancy solution (usually).

Speaking of bowling balls…
