Bring on all ‘Neigh’-sayers!

18 04 2016

“Truth is tough.  It will not break, like a bubble, at a touch.  Nay, you may kick it about all day like a football, and it will be round and full at evening.” ~ Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr.

Whether I’m at home or at work, I worry around all the edges of an issue.   I like to poke holes in theories, try ideas out by wondering what will happen that can make it fail, and generally playing Devil’s advocate.  I have to be careful when it’s someone’s pet theory, because challenging an idea that is close to someone’s heart can create issues if not careful.  So, I’ll say something like “I agree with you, but have you considered this possibility?”

My point is this:  Good ideas can stand a little scrutiny.  If it’s a good idea, then you can try to poke holes in it all day long, and it will survive the doubters.  Mediocre ideas should be able to take a little scrutiny, also.  They may get modified, and be turned into fantastic ideas.  Bad ideas… well, it’s better to kill them early than to roll along thinking you’re brilliant, and then they fail, after expending way too much time on them.  So, if I, or anyone pushes back when you have an idea, don’t sweat it.  Either you’ll have a fully vetted good idea, a better idea than the one you started with, or you’ll save a bunch of time and money.  Don’t take the scrutiny personally… it’s not about you – it’s about doing the most we can with the resources we have.

Speaking of Nay (or is it Neigh?)…
