When Mr. Murphy comes knocking.

10 05 2016

“In war, as in life, it is often necessary when some cherished scheme has failed, to take up the best alternative open, and if so, it is folly not to work for it with all your might.” ~Winston Churchill

Mr. Churchill, while a man of much gravitas, also seems to like run-on sentences.  That said, he does have a great point.  Sometimes you have a plan for the way you want things to go.  It might be a new way of doing things, or a new “toy” that you’ve bought and expect to change the world with the way it makes life better.  Sometimes your first choice doesn’t work out, and you have to soldier on.

Leaders, don’t let your exuberance for your pet project get doused when something doesn’t work out the way you planned.  That plan may have been a good one, and only Mr. Murphy prevented it from happening.  Don’t get so wrapped up in your plan that you don’t think through what your plan B might be.  Hope for the best, expect the worst, and enjoy it when Mr. Murphy doesn’t come knocking.

Speaking of alternatives…
