Yearning for a little black & white

8 06 2016

“To the degree we’re not living our dreams, our comfort zone has more control of us than we have over ourselves.” ~ Peter McWilliams

Comfort is nice and easy.  It might be your favorite easy chair, or it might be the meatloaf Mondays and Taco Tuesdays.  Predictability creates little uncertainty, as you know what to expect, and what it will feel like.  With taxes and budgeting, you might be most comfortable Doing It Like Last Year (DILLY), and there are times when that’s appropriate.  Why re-invent the wheel when the same old wheel still rolls downhill without a problem.

The trick, leaders, is to not just let complacency be the norm just because it’s easier.  There are times to shake things up, and some stress is healthy – you can’t build up muscles if you don’t tear them down with exercise, first.  The real trick is knowing when to leave that comfort zone, and when cruise control is just fine.  There is very little black and white in leadership, it’s gray, and you need to decide which way to lean.  Don’t be afraid to ask other leaders what they think.

Speaking of zones…
