Pulling your head out of your in-box.

“Vision is the art of seeing what is invisible to others.” ~ Jonathan Swift

Anyone who has showed up to the office, only to find a full in-box before 8am knows that you must do tactical, reactionary stuff as part of our work.  There’s weekly meetings, monthly recurring tasks, and other “things that just need to get done”.  As I spent part of the last 2 days working on the strategic plan for our Board of Directors meeting next week, I know from experience that sometimes you have to be forced to lift your head up and look long-term, and strategically at this thing called work.

Leaders, if you must, set yourself a weekly reminder to once in a while, pick your head out of your in-box, and make an effort to communicate the long-term vision to your team.  If YOU can get caught up in your in-box, think about how hard it might be for our front-line staff members to think long-term.  For them, that might be taking a few minutes to document how they could save 10 keystrokes 5 times per day, or to point out how a small change might make the customer experience better.  Having everyone occasionally thinking strategically will make the whole company smarter.

Speaking of art…
