The bite that comes with honesty.

9 09 2016

“A person without a sense of humor is like a wagon without springs.  It’s jolted by every pebble on the road.” ~ Henry Ward Beecher

“The high road is always respected.  Honesty and integrity are always rewarded.” ~ Scott Hamilton

Honesty and Humor are the 2 H’s of today’s leadership blog.  You CAN have one without the other, and do OK.  However, honesty is something that will sometimes bite you.  Whether that’s telling someone that the dress really DOES make them look fat, or having a contrary opinion to someone who talks with their fists, honesty can hurt (you or them) sometimes.  Integrity & honesty aren’t always easy, so having a sense of humor about life will help you to keep perspective when you have to take your lumps in order to be honest, and say it like it is.

Leaders, keep in mind that it helps to have a sense of humor and some self-deprecation in order to be successful.  You may survey your people, and ask what they think about you… and then you might hear things that you don’t like.  You might have to tell a business partner about a mistake that you made, even though you might be able to hide it.  Remember, that even when some pain comes with being honest, you can look in the mirror with bright eyes, and know that you dealt with hardship with integrity.  Everyone else involved will also know that about you, which always pays dividends in the long run.

Speaking of roads…
