Those ridiculous workplace skills.

11 10 2016

“I’ve always considered myself to be just average talent and what I have is a ridiculous insane obsessiveness for practice and preparation.  You know, while the other guy’s sleeping?  I’m working.” ~ Will Smith

I think that there are 2 kinds of workplace skills.  The kind that Will Smith talks about: preparedness.  This means practicing, studying, perfecting and being the best at some task that is known, predictable, scalable and routine.  This is how some of our front-line workers get so good at their jobs.  They know the QA forms backward and forwards, they have all of the disclosures memorized, and they deliver quality service consistently.

Then, they get promoted to management, and they need to think on their feet how to solve unpredictable, non-routine, and inconsistent challenges.  This second workplace skill is called creativity.  The people who have this skill will excel at having challenges thrown at them, one after another, and enjoy coming up with creative solutions to those problems.  I’m back from a week of vacation, so sorry the comic came out so late, and is maybe not as creative as some (you’ve heard this theme before).  The quotes available today didn’t inspire me much.  🙂

Speaking of ridiculous…
